There is much to discuss about awareness, safety tips and preventive measures that one can do which we go into much more in depth in our classes. We want to share with you a few important keys that we feel may be of great assistance.
AWARENESS IS THE FIRST STEP TO ANY FORM OF SELF-DEFENSE (MENTAL, EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL). Increasing your personal awareness is the most important element of effective self-defense. Awareness of the reality that crime and violence, as well as an awareness of your environment are the keys to your personal safety. Being aware does not have to mean that you must be paranoid. You can’t live your life expecting a problem but you have to train yourself to be more alert , adjust and elevate your level of awareness. Use good common sense and remember to pay attention to what’s happening around you, keeping yourself safe is a must in an increasingly hostile world.
TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS. Learn to trust your instincts and listen to what your intuition tells you. Trust those “little voices/gut feelings” when they tell you that something or someone “just doesn’t look/feel right”. All of your sense should come to full alert, and you should be prepared to take action (if it’s necessary) to get out of the situation or away from that person as fast possible. HONOR YOUR INTUITION!
AVOID PRESENTING A VICTIM PROFILE.
YOU ARE AN ANIMAL OF NATURE, FULLY ENDOWED WITH HEARING, SIGHT, INTELLECT AND DANGEROUS DEFENSES. YOU ARE NOT EASY PREY, SO DON’T ACT LIKE YOU ARE.
EARBUDS—OY! Enjoying music through earbuds literally disables your survival sense, YOUR HEARING which is one sense that warns you that danger is approaching. This is also an outward sign to an assailant that you are NOT paying attention. Only use them in the gym not outdoors while jogging and running.
MAKING LOCKING DOORS A HABIT— Whether it is your car door or the door(s) to your home, apartment or dorm room—ALWAYS LOCK YOUR DOORS! When moving into a new home, apartment, dorm room have ALL of your doors re-keyed and be present while the work is being done. Every exterior door should have a keyed deadbolt and a keyless deadbolt that locks from the inside only. Locks are installed to be used! Make it part of your routine, like brushing your teeth, after awhile you won’t even think about it, you will do it automatically. Immediately upon entering your, LOCK YOUR DOORS AND DRIVE AWAY! Don’t “dilly/dally”.
“AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE.”
LEARN TO KNOW/RECOGNIZE WHAT RISK LOOKS LIKE. Assailants will use the word “we” to establish premature trust to develop manipulation. “Charm” – see/know what is behind the charm. Too many details-be aware of the context as to how details are offered-they keep talking. “Typecasting”-do not feel compelled to prove his opinion of you is not accurate, your response is what is being sought-your defense is silence. “Loan sharking”-a way that places you in his debit and in turn makes you feel that you owe him something-do not divulge information. “Unsolicited promise”-promises are used to convince intention, they are not guarantees; placing doubt of the “Messenger of Intuition” – be suspicious of the words, “I promise”. “NO” is a COMPLETE SENTENCE; “no must never be negotiated; declining to hear “no” is a signal that someone is either seeking control or refusing to relinquish in order to ascertain more efforts to control. Do not ever negotiate-negotiations are about possibilities. SAY “NO” AND MEAN IT!
